Yes, if there was oral contact — a cold sore is HSV, usually HSV-1, and oral-to-genital transmission is a well-documented route. Risk is highest when a lesion is present or forming, and it is not zero between outbreaks because of asymptomatic viral shedding.

Most adults carrying HSV-1 acquired it in childhood, from a relative, with no sexual contact involved. It is extraordinarily common — which does not make a new genital infection trivial, but should temper the panic.
