It depends entirely on what happens after it. Rapid screens are designed to be sensitive, not conclusive — they are meant to be confirmed. When a positive screen is handed over as a diagnosis, people get treated for infections they do not have, and keep the one they do.

A pattern we see

A patient arrives having been told at a free screening event that they have syphilis. We run confirmatory testing. The syphilis result does not hold up — and the full molecular panel finds a different pathogen entirely, the one actually causing the symptoms. The screening test was not lying. It was being read as something it was never designed to be.

What "cheap" leaves out

Typically: extragenital sites, trichomonas, M. genitalium, and any confirmation step. If your throat and rectum were never swabbed, a negative result did not examine the places most likely to be positive — see the site guide.
